“Vyommitra” To Be India’s First Human-Made Space Flight

  • “Vyommitra” is a female robot astronaut, named after the Sanskrit words “Vyoma” (space) and “Mitra” (friend). 
  • The mission is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, with a manned mission set for 2025. 
  • The robot is equipped to monitor module parameters, issue alerts, and execute Life Support operations. 
  • The robot is designed to simulate human functions in the space environment and interact with the Life Support System. 
  • The first Test Vehicle Flight TV D1 was completed on October 21, 2021, to qualify the crew escape and parachute systems. 
  • The Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate human space capabilities by launching astronauts into an orbit of 400 kilometers and landing them safely in India’s sea waters.
