Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh Appoints As Commandant, National Defence Academy

  • Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, took over as Commandant on 25 May 2024. 
  • Singh has held several appointments, both afloat and ashore, and has served onboard Indian Naval Ships Ranjit and Prahar. 
  • He has been part of the commissioning crew of three Indian warships, INS Brahmaputra, INS Shivalik, and INS Kochi. 
  • Singh has also commanded INS Vidyut & INS Khukri. 
  • He has held staff tenures at the Directorate of Personnel/NHQ, the Directorate of Naval Intelligence/NHQ, and the Indian Naval Work-up Team. 
  • Singh was appointed as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet on 29 Nov 2022, maintaining high operational preparedness and focusing on ‘Ordnance on Target’. 
  • He was elevated to Vice Admiral on 15 Jan 2024 and was appointed as Controller of Personnel Service. 
  • Singh has received numerous awards, including the Admiral Katarı Trophy and the Chief of Naval Staff ‘Unit Citation’. 
  • His academic qualifications include an MSc and MPhil in Defence & Strategic Studies.
