Sri Lankan Tamils against Indian Tamils over Katchatheevu Issue

  • The diplomatic row over the Katchatheevu Island between India and Sri Lanka has resurfaced as the BJP is campaigning in Tamil Nadu for the Lok Sabha polls. 
  • Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry has stated that the issue has been resolved and “there is no controversy.” 
  • The Sri Lankan cabinet has not discussed the issue as it was never raised. 
  • Sri Lankan media has taken a critical view of the issue, claiming that the remarks were meant to ignite South Indian nationalism and were “a distortion of facts.” 
  • Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri shared a ‘Foreign Policy’ article titled ‘Sri Lanka Hones Its Balancing Act’, stating that South Asia has become a battleground for geopolitical rivalry. 
  • Sri Lankan minister Jeevan Thondaman, an ethnic Tamil, stated that Katchatheevu Island falls within Sri Lankan jurisdiction and that they have not received any communication from the Indian government regarding the same. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP’s Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai accused the alliance of the Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of “unmasked double standards” on Katchatheevu’s handover to Sri Lanka. 
  • Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar claimed that Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave no importance to the island and thought that the issue would lead to an unnecessary dispute with friendly Sri Lanka. 
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin questioned whether the central government has taken any steps in the last ten years to reclaim the island from Sri Lanka.
