Prime Minister Inaugurates Waterway Projects

  • PM Modi dedicated two hybrid electric catamaran vessels, MV Guh and MV Nishadraj, built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) through Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). 
  • The vessels, powered by fast-charging batteries, are designed to reduce carbon emissions by 400 MT annually. 
  • The vessels will promote religious tourism in the state. 
  • The government of India aims to foster confidence in the maritime sector and encourage transitioning to greener and cleaner fuels. 
  • The Harit Nauka-Inland Vessels Green Transition Guidelines emphasized the government’s commitment to adopting green vessels and operationalizing a green ecosystem. 
  • The Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) aims to improve the navigability of NW1 from Varanasi to Haldia in West Bengal. 
  • A Quick Pontoon Opening Mechanism System (QPOMS) was inaugurated to reduce the time for manual dismantling and reassembly of Kulfi pontoon bridges across NW-1. 
  • These initiatives represent a significant step towards harnessing clean energy, promoting responsible tourism, and enhancing connectivity across India’s waterways. 
  • The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 outlines 46 initiatives to enhance the modal share of coastal shipping and inland water transport.
