India’s Power Ministry Issues Resource Adequacy Guidelines

  • The Ministry of Power of India has sent a detailed letter to all states and union territories for adherence to “Resource Adequacy Guidelines” to ensure adequate power growth in line with rising electricity demand. 
  • The Indian economy is expected to grow rapidly, leading to a surge in power consumption and generation capacity. 
  • The government issued “Resource Adequacy Guidelines” in June 2023, requiring distribution licensees to prepare a 10-year horizon Resource Adequacy Plan. 
  • All states and union territories are required to complete their Resource Adequacy Plans for the period starting 2024-25 to 2033-34. 
  • The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has completed “Resource Adequacy (RA) Studies” up to 2031-32 for 23 States/UTs, while the rest are in progress. 
  • Distribution licensees are now required to submit data up to 2033-34 for national-level RA studies.
