India’s Largest Tribal Festival in Telangana

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Arjun Munda, visited the Sammakka-Saralamma Maha Jatara in Medaram, Telangana. 
  • The festival is the second-largest fair in India, after the Kumbh Mela, and symbolizes ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. 
  • Munda noted the festival’s spiritual joy and vibrant atmosphere, offering prayers to the deities of Sammakka-Saralamma. 
  • The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned Rs. 2.30 crores for the Medaram Jatara 2024, promoting tribal culture and heritage. 
  • Activities include a documentary on Medaram Jatara, exhibition-cum-sale of tribal arts, crafts, and cuisine, the National Tribal Dance festival, the strengthening of tribal and tribal homestays, and competitions for tribal youth and students. 
  • The festival was declared a State Festival in 1996 due to its high footfall.
