Indian Navy Deploys INS Sumedha In Nigerian Waters


  • Port call at Lagos, Nigeria to the Gulf of Guinea (GOG)
  • To strengthen diplomatic relations, maritime cooperation and interoperability between the two navies
  • Activities planned include professional interactions, harbour conferences, naval exercises and a medical camp with Nigerian doctors
  • Maritime Partnership Exercise with NNS Unity (Nigerian Naval ship)
  • This is the second deployment to GOG – The place is affected by pirates → that disrupt trade for several countries.
  • The first deployment was by INS Tarkash in October 2022

INS Sumedha:

  • Commanded by Cdr MC Chandeep
  • Third indigenously designed and manufactured ship
  • Belongs to the ‘Saryu’ Class Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel (NOPV)
  • Capable of multiple roles and Fleet Support Operations
  • Equipped with weapon systems, state-of-art navigation, communicationsystems and Electronic Warfare suites
  • Has earlier completed → Fleet support operations coastal, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance and HARD missions (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief)
  • Recent HADR Mission: Operation Kaveri evacuation of Indians from war hit Sudan in April 2023
