India-Bhutan 5th Joint Group of Customs Meeting

  • The meeting took place on May 6th-7th, 2024 in Leh, Ladakh. 
  • The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Surjit Bhujabal, Special Secretary and Member (Customs), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Government of India, and Mr. Sonam Jamtsho, Director General, Department of Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Finance, Royal Government of Bhutan. 
  • Key topics discussed included opening new Land Customs Stations, development of infrastructure, automation, and digitization of transit processes, smuggling prevention, coordinated cross-border management, pre-arrival exchange of Customs data, a bilateral agreement on Customs cooperation, and movement of transit cargo under electronic cargo system. 
  • Bhutan expressed gratitude to India and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs for their support in capacity building, training, and skill development. 
  • The meeting aimed to redefine and re-engineer Customs procedures, promote Customs cooperation and facilitate cross-border trade facilitation. 
  • India is Bhutan’s top trade partner, with India’s trade with Bhutan more than tripled since 2014. 
  • The meeting concluded with an optimistic note, focusing on discovering new strands of complementarities, responding to youth expectations, and adapting to rapid changes related to new technologies and social innovations.
