First National Conference on Promotion of Seaweed Cultivation

  • The aim is to implement seaweed cultivation across India.
  • Chaired by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Mr Parshottam Rupala.
  • At Koteshwar (Kori Creek), Kutch, Gujarat.
  • Participants: fishermen and fisherwomen, fish farmers, State/UT government officials, fisheries Cooperatives.

  • An alternate employment generation.
  • It diversifies marine production.
  • Enhances fish farmer income.
  • Reduces reliance on traditional fishing.
  • Diversifies coastal communities’ livelihoods.

Exhibition Stalls:

  • Fisheries start-ups: Climacrew (Gujarat) and Pukai Aquagri (Andhra Pradesh).
  • Research institutes: ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), CSIR – Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) and ICAR- Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT).
  • NFDB (GoI).
  • Showcased the seaweed value-added products and cultivation processes and materials used.

Kori Creek Project Site

  • It had different methods of seaweed cultivation viz. Monoline, tube-net and rafts.
  • They were demonstrated by CMFRI, CSMCRI and NFDB.
