First Inland Waterways Development Council

  • The first meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC)
  • Held on board vessel MV Ganges Queen at the Kolkata Dock Complex, Kolkata
  • Chaired by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Mr Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • To enable inland waterways for economic growth and commerce.
  • Investment of ₹45,000 Crore for the development of river cruise tourism in India, ₹35,000 Crore for cruise vessels and ₹10,000 Crore for the development of Cruise Terminal infrastructure
  • For cargo trade, ₹15,000 was allocated during the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS) held in Mumbai in October 2023.
  • The Minister launched ‘Harit Nauka’ guidelines and ‘River Cruise Tourism Roadmap, 2047’.

Key Highlights:

  • To enable capacity in an additional 26 waterways, for River Cruise tourism from the current 8 waterways.
  • Number of cruise circuits with night stays to be increased from 17 to 80.
  • Number of river cruise terminals to be increased from 15 to 185.
  • Cruise tourism traffic with night stays to be increased from 5,000 to 1.20 lakh by 2047.
  • Organised by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India.
