EDI in Distant Customs Units in North East Launched

  • Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) at remote Land Customs Stations (LCS) of the North Eastern Region (NER) via virtual mode in New Delhi. 
  • The EDI will enhance the efficiency of the movement of goods and customs clearances, enhancing regional trade and fostering economic growth. 
  • The EDI launch was attended by several officials including Shri Sanjay Malhotra, Revenue Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Shri Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Shri Alok Shukla, Member (Admin & Vig), Shri Vivek Ranjan, Member (Tax Policy & Legal), Shri Surjit Bhujabal, Member (Customs), and Smt. Aruna Narayan Gupta, Member (IT & Tax Payer Services & Technology), CBIC. 
  • The EDI enablement of customs stations is seen as a step towards making the tax system and customs procedures ‘faceless’ and ‘automated’. 
  • The NER holds high geostrategic significance and carries immense trade potential as the Land Customs Stations (LCS) enable the flow of trade and transit with neighboring countries.
