Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs Session 7: Quality Standards Finalized

  • The 7th session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) was held in Kochi, India, from 29th January to 2nd February 2024.
  • The session was the first to be conducted physically after the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • 109 delegates from 31 countries attended, and quality standards for five spices were finalized.
  • The committee forwarded these standards to the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) for adoption as full-fledged Codex standards.
  • The strategy of grouping spices was successfully implemented, finalizing the first group standard for ‘spices derived from fruits and berries’. 
  • Proposals for the development of Codex standards for Dried Coriander Seeds, Large Cardamom, Sweet Marjoram, and Cinnamon were accepted.
  • The next meeting of the Committee will be conducted after 18 months, with electronic working groups (EWGs) continuing the process of multinational consultation.
  • The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is an international body tasked with formulating internationally accepted standards about human food.
