CIL and BHEL Sign Agreement for Ammonium Nitrate Facility

  • Coal India Limited (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) have signed a joint venture agreement (JVA) to establish an ammonium nitrate plant in Odisha.
  • The plant, located in the Lakhanpur area of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, will initially produce 2000 tons of ammonium nitrate per day, with an annual production of 6.60 Lakh tons.
  • The coal will be supplied by CIL, while BHEL will use pressurized fluidized bed gasification (PFBG) technology.
  • The partnership is a significant step towards the National Coal Gasification Mission, which aims to utilize the chemical properties of coal.
  • The plant will help secure raw materials, reduce import dependency on ammonium nitrate, and promote Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.
  • The project is expected to be a role model for the Ministry of Coal, with government support for viable gap funding.
