Chandrayaan-3 Landing Site Officially Becomes Shiva Shakti

  • The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved the name ‘Shiva Shakti’ for the Chandrayaan-3 landing site, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement in August 2023.
  • The IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has approved the name Statio Shiv Shakti for the landing site of Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander.
  • The name is derived from the compound word from Indian mythology, representing the masculine and feminine duality of nature.
  • The site of the Chandrayaan-1’s moon impact probe was previously named ‘Jawahar Point’ or ‘Jawahar Sthal’.
  • Modi also announced that the point where Chandrayaan-2 left its footprints will be called ‘Tiranga’, a reminder that failure is not the end.
  • The naming of the two sites is seen as a testament to India’s scientific spirit, technology, and temperament.
