Amendment to Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 Notified

  • The Wild Life (Protection) Act, of 1972 provides a legal framework for protecting wild animal species, managing their habitat, and controlling trade in their products. 
  • The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, came into force on 1st April 2023. 
  • Section 49M of the Act allows for the registration of possession, transfer, birth, and death of living scheduled animal species listed in CITES. 
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the rules for Section 49M. 
  • Persons possessing a living specimen must apply for registration within six months and thirty days. 
  • Transfers, births, and deaths must be reported to the State Chief Wild Life Warden via the PARIVESH 2.0 portal.
